ST's eco-design commitment is to designing products systematically taking into consideration the environmental impact of the device during its whole life cycle, including raw materials, transportation, manunfacturing, usage and end of life.
The starting point of our eco-design activity is Life-Cycle Assessment.
ST has developed its own Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology in accordance with ISO standards (ISO 14040, 2006; ISO 14044, 2006), and has conducted several studies to identify the main factors contributing to environmental impact.
ST’s LCA methodology takes into account the following key stages of the product life:
- Extraction and treatment of raw materials;
- Product manufacturing;
- Transport and distribution;
- Product use;
- End of life.

There are significant challenges to carrying out a complete LCA for each of ST’s products, notably because of the vast number of different microchips we produce and the complexity of our manufacturing processes. To overcome this challenge, we have developed a methodology that enables us to provide a quick calculation of the carbon and water footprint of our products. This methodology provides water and carbon footprinting measurements comparable to full LCA, but within a shorter timeframe.
- The water footprint estimates the m3 of water consumed throughout the product’s life cycle.
- The CO2 footprint estimates the product’s CO2 emissions throughout its life cycle, expressed as kg CO2 equivalent.
In 2013 we have completed a third party assessment and validation of our "Screening LCA" methodology.
