48 V direct to Point-of-Load

ST is implementing direct digital power conversion from 48 V with the introduction of three new high-performance power conversion ICs to support the complete range of datacenter applications. The 3 new ICs enable robust and high-efficiency operation (best-in-class power efficiency of >97% at 12 V/ 500 W) at input voltages from 36 to 72 V, with output voltages between 0.5 and 12 V. The ICs are fully compliant with Intel’s VR12.5 (Haswell and BroadWell), VR13 (Skylake) and DDR3/4 voltage-regulation specifications, and all FPGAs and ASICs for data center applications.
By eliminating the intermediate conversion stages, the direct digital power conversion from 48 V greatly reduces the power losses in datacenters and reduces space, cooling requirements and costs.

Three new ICs:

STRG02: Secondary-side controller featuring predictive ZVS and ZCS control
STRG04: High-performance 60 V full-bridge driver
STRG06: Scalable digital power controller (can manage up to 6 converters in parallel) supporting output power from 50 W to more than 300 W. Implements Energy Proportional control, adaptive interleaving, current sharing and a complete set of the extensive PMBus™ commands.
