High-efficiency LED flash power supply ICs are ideal for driving a single or multiple white LED flash in camera phones, PDAs and other handheld devices. The synchronous buck-boost topology with output current control guarantees the correct LED current over all possible conditions of battery level and LED forward voltage. Hard and soft triggering of the flash are supported. The devices include several functions to protect the chip and the power LEDs. These include soft-start control, over-temperature detection/protection and open and shorted LED detection/protection.

The STCF04 is an integrated camera flash and torch controller that raises the maximum power of an LED flash module from a few watts, typical of today’s designs, to over 40 W, producing the brightness equivalent to an outdoor security floodlight. The new device also provides extra flash and torch brightness controls, with eight user-selectable levels for the flash and 12 for the torch, as well as a light-sensor input.  Flash and torch safety timers, temperature sensing and short-circuit protection features are also built in.
