A key aspect of smart grids is the distributed grid that relies on a broad network of energy sources where the user is both a consumer and a supplier of energy.

There are two energy sources able to generate reasonable power in both small and large systems and also able to give a return on investment and maintenance costs: these are solar energy and wind power. As well as the current technologies that convert the energy to power (photovoltaic panels, turbines), there is a need to maximize the system efficiency by reducing power losses inside the required electronics boards for power conversion control. In this field, STMicroelectronics is leading the development of advanced power semiconductor technologies and innovative system solutions.
