Application-specific interfaces (ASI) are functional blocks that address electricity meters, Ethernet PHY, smartcards for set-top boxes and other specific applications.
The STPMxx family of metering ICs provides highly-accurate measurements of energy parameters including active energy (kWh), apparent energy (kVA), reactive energy (kVAR) and RMS, as required by many applications, including meters, smart plugs and appliances, industrial instruments, monitoring systems and many others. They address both single-phase and poly-phase energy meters.
STPMxx devices combine accurate analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with specialized digital signal processing units (DSPs) to perform critical measurements by simply and effectively using different kinds of sensors (current transformers, Rogowsky coils, shunts, Hall sensors). This ensures a flexible architecture that gives the best bill of material optimization.
For poly-phase smart meters, ST has unveiled a modular solution built with a single calculator IC (STPMC1) connected to one or more modulator ICs (STPMS1/S2) depending on the number of phases. This solution offers greater accuracy and reduced development cost. In addition, it allows the modulator ICs in the sensing circuitry be mounted closer to the measurement transducers, so considerably reducing noise effects.
