Sustainability Strategy

ST’s Sustainability mission is to be recognized as a world leader in innovation for sustainable development through excellence in our people, our products, the environment and the community.

ST has always been strongly committed to sustainability, and in the early 1990s we were one of the first multinational companies to implement an environmental policy, complete with publicly disclosed targets that went beyond legal requirements.

Over the last twenty years we have increasingly widened the scope of our commitments to cover 22 sustainability priorities identified by ST and our stakeholders as being the most material to achieving long-term business growth and success. For more information, see ST stakeholder engagement page.

Today, sustainability is integrated throughout our entire business, allowing us to maximize opportunities in areas such as responsible products and innovation, as well as helping us to predict and mitigate risks to our operations and business performance.

ST’s Sustainability Strategy comprises four pillars:

Employees are ST’s primary stakeholders and are fundamental to the success of our company.  Ensuring their health, safety and wellbeing and providing them with opportunities to grow, develop and innovate are our key priorities. Our approach to respecting our employees’ human rights is founded on international standards whilst taking into account the local and regional cultural differences and values of our employees. We are committed to continuously improving labor standards and sharing best practice across our operations.

We are continually looking for ways to create high-quality, innovative, eco-designed and responsible products that help improve the quality of life of final customers. Our products are manufactured using advanced technologies and processes to ensure we use the least amount of electricity, water and chemicals possible. Many of our products help address important global challenges such as reducing energy consumption, improving security and making healthcare more effective, affordable and accessible.

We have adopted a rigorous approach to managing our operations in a way that minimizes our impact on the environment. Over the last 15 years we have significantly reduced our electricity, water, chemical, waste and greenhouse gases emissions thanks to our ‘3-Rs’ approach: reduce, reuse, recycle. We are also looking ahead to try and future proof our operations against some of the most pressing global challenges, such as water scarcity, (water risk and opportunities assessment conducted at sites) and global warming (offsetting our remaining direct emissions through reforestation programs).

We are strongly committed to creating value for our stakeholders through constructive, transparent engagement and collaboration. The work of the ST Foundation is just one of the ways in which we contribute to social development in the communities where we operate.

In 2011, we began evaluating our Sustainability Strategy against ISO 26000 “Guidance for Social Responsibility”. This international standard provides a useful framework against which we have reviewed and improved our risk and materiality process as well as our stakeholder engagement approach.
