Sustainability Strategy

ST has always been strongly committed to sustainability, and in the early 1990s we were one of the first multinational companies to implement an environmental policy, complete with publicly disclosed targets that went beyond legal requirements. Since then, we have increasingly widened the scope of our commitments.

In 2014, we conducted a comprehensive materiality exercise and carried out a full review of our Sustainability strategy to answer to stakeholders' expectations and interests and to ensure alignment with business priorities and international standards.
 
Today, sustainability is integrated throughout our entire business, allowing us to maximize opportunities in areas such as sustainable technology and innovation, as well as helping us to predict and mitigate risks to our operations and business performance.
 
ST’s Sustainability strategy now addresses 13 priorities and comprises three pillars:
 
  People
Employees are ST’s primary stakeholders and are fundamental to the success of our company. Ensuring their health, safety and well-being and providing them with opportunities to grow, develop and innovate are our key priorities. Our approach to respecting our employees’ human rights is founded on international standards whilst taking into account the local and regional cultural differences and values of our employees.
   
  Business
Our actions to drive sustainable progress are designed to improve our financial performance, decrease risk and support and improve our reputation among stakeholders as a long-time pioneer in our industry. We are continually looking for ways to foster innovation and create solutions that can have a positive contribution to people's lives and we are committed to maintaining a continuous and open dialog with our customers to ensure that their expectations are met.
   
  Environment & Operations
We adopt a rigorous approach to managing our operations in a way that minimizes our impact on the environment. Over the last 20 years we have significantly reduced our electricity, water, chemical, waste and greenhouse gases emissions thanks to our ‘3-Rs’ approach: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We are continually looking for ways to create high-quality, innovative, eco-designed and responsible products that help improve the quality of life of final customers. We address the challenge of supply chain responsibility through long-term collaboration, audits and support.
We are strongly committed to creating additional value and minimizing risks for all our stakeholders in the communities where we operate. This includes local economic development, industry and academic partnerships and community involvement initiatives. The work of the ST Foundation is just one of the ways in which we contribute to social development. Local Communities is a transversal area linked to our three pillars.

In 2011, we began evaluating our Sustainability strategy against ISO 26000 “Guidance for Social Responsibility”. This international standard provides a useful framework against which we have reviewed and improved our risk and materiality process as well as our stakeholder engagement approach.
