STMicroelectronics Invites Taiwan’s Next Generation of Engineers to Join 2013 iNEMO® Design Contest in Taiwan

Competition set to spur “Innovation in New Life”
Taipei, Taiwan /

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, the world’s top MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) manufacturer, and the leading supplier of MEMS sensors for consumer and portable applications1, today launched the 2013 iNEMO Design Contest in Taiwan. It is the third time ST is running the open competition for students and young engineers in Taiwan to design innovative applications built around ST’s award-winning2  iNEMO smart multi-sensor technology. This year’s iNEMO Design Contest centers on the theme of “Innovation in New Life” and encourages contestants to leverage the wide range of sensing technologies that MEMS offers to create innovative ways of interaction among technology, life, and environment, making our life more convenient.

ST's iNEMO is a unique evaluation and development tool that offers up to 10 degrees of freedom, combining 3-axis linear acceleration, 3-axis angular rate and 3-axis motion sensing through a magnetic field, together with barometric/altitude readings, managed by an STM32 microcontroller. The integration of multiple sensors with processing capabilities, dedicated software and wireless connectivity in a single platform enables leaps in functionality and performance in a wide variety of applications, including Gaming, Human Machine Interface, Robotics, Portable Navigation Devices, and Patient Monitoring.

“We are excited to announce the third year of our iNEMO Design Contest in Taiwan. With over 250 young engineers participating in previous editions, we have successfully inspired the next-generation of innovators to create useful and valuable MEMS applications that can contribute to improving our daily lives,” said Patrick Boulaud, Regional Vice President, Analog, MEMS and Sensors, Greater China and South Asia Region, STMicroelectronics. “Last year, contestants used ST’s iNEMO platform to design intelligent robots, as well as enhanced versions of applications we already see in our daily lives, including traffic signals, tennis training or music entertainment, demonstrating keen observation talent of the young generation in Taiwan and their ability to solve real problems with leading-edge technologies. We are also pleased to see the students’ projects have been well recognized by our customers and partners.”

The iNEMO Design Contest will run in Taiwan until November 21, 2013 and offers total prizes in excess of NT$255,0003  to the ten most successful iNEMO design concepts, evaluated on their functionality and practicality, implementation, creativity, presentation and final demonstration. The winners will be announced at ST’s Annual MEMS Symposium in Taipei on December 5, 2013.
