WE HAVE A VERY
DIFFERENT DEFINITION OF GLOBALIZATIONS The word "globalization" carries a
lot of baggage. Some see it as an efficient way to export a centralized
business model; others see it as an attempt by business to dominate society. At
ST, the word means something very different. We define globalization as the
respon-sible development of a geographically balanced network of business units
that are fully integrated within both our worldwide business structure and
within the local societies in which they operate. We have never attempted to
export a "right" way of doing things or to over-supervise from a centralized
command post. Instead, we tap into the unique strength of each local unit and
leverage those strengths worldwide. As cultural differences become increasingly
important in a shrinking world, our global approach gives us yet another
advan-tage over our competitors. Our design operations are not concentrated in
one part of the world, our manufacturing operations in another, and customers
in yet another. In this way we achieve balance by staying close to our
customers worldwide. In virtually every major economic region, we develop our
presence at every level of our business development, manufacturing and
marketing. Nurturing local talent at each of those levels helps us make sure we
continue to inject sustained value into each of the societies where we
operate. |
