With mobile multimedia technology
and the need for broadband interconnection both on the rise, the growth rate
for semiconductor devices for wireless communications will likely outpace the
industry, averaging 24% compounded growth over the next five years. focuses
primarily on the wireless communications and networking arenas, where its
products, technologies and partnerships are perfectly tuned to the emerging
opportunities. In 2001, ST introduced a new
silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS process tailored for cost-sensitive wireless
applications. We also introduced a digital camera module specifically developed
to meet the critical size and power consumption limits of next-generation
cellular phones, personal digital assistants and other multimedia-enabled
portable communications devices.ST is a major supplier of Flash memories for
cellular phones, offering both standard and application-specific devices, and
has introduced a 64Mbit device built in 0.15-micron technology and optimized
for cellular phones. In networking, ST introduced
innovative products aimed at Ethernet, xDSL and Voice-over-Internet Protocol
(VoIP) telephony. We also demonstrated a working prototype of our Zipper-DMT
VDSLmodem technology that will combine the very high bandwidth of VDSL withADSL
spectrum compatibility. During the year, we signed a key
agreement with Huawei Technologies for the joint development of a key silicon
chip for subscriber line interface cards in telephone net-works. Huawei is the
number-one telecom equipment manufacturer in the fast-growing market of China.
