From engine and transmission control to safety and on-board entertainment, electronics and microelectronics are steadily pervading all sectors of the automotive industry, and the automotive semiconductors segment is projected to average annual growth of 13% over the next five years. ST targets the whole of the automotive field, where the chip supplier competition is not only based on price and leading-edge performance, but also on sustained track records for quality and reliability.
During 2001, ST introduced a high-power SoC device designed for "mechatronic" applications where the electronics section is physically integrated with mechanical ele-ments, which will be used for a turbocharger application by DaimlerChrysler. We also secured an agreement with Delphi Automotive Systems, the largest producer of vehicle systems and components in the world, to cooperate on the design and development of new intelligent power IC products. With the launch of XM Satellite RadioÕs U.S. digital satellite radio, ST received volume orders for the two-chip receiver chipsets from radio manufacturers including Sony, Pioneer and Alpine.
