FOCUS ON SMARTCARDS

Growth in the industrial sector is dominated by Smartcards, and ST's track record in security, technology and high-volume manufacturing puts it in pole position to profit from a projected average annual growth rate of 24% for Smartcard chips. ST maintained its momentum by introducing several important new products, including a device that com-bines massive on-chip memory with the worldÕs fastest contactless communications interface. ST made key breakthroughs in Japan, supplying a device for the groundbreaking Japanese governmental card and providing secure microcontrollers for the first EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) credit cards. We also further differentiated ourselves in the quality arena. After earning the worldÕs first security certification to the new international ISO15408 standard for products used in telecommunications and banking applications, we earned a similar certification in partnership with Gemplus in the Smartcard sector. We also introduced a chipset that simplifies the design of contactless Smartcard readers, stimulat-ing growth of the application in access control, ticketing systems, E-purse and ID cards.
