Contributing $806 million or 16% to ST’s revenues in 1999, the industrial segment, which includes the majority of sales via distributors, ranges from sophisticated smartcards to intelligent power circuits for robots, factory automation, lighting, battery chargers and power supplies. This market is expected to increase at a compounded annual rate of 13% between 1999 and 2003. Throughout the year, ST continued to set the pace in the smartcard mar- ket, where it is a world leading supplier of secure micro-controller chips for advanced applications such as electronic purses, bankcards, pay-TV and GSM systems. Like many other applications, smartcards are being profoundly affected by the global convergence of computing and communications and the future clearly lies with multi-application cards. These will operate over open networks with functionalities defined in horizontal terms such as elec- tronic commerce, access control or transportation. In 1999, major smartcard manufacturers selected the ST19 family as the successor to the industry standard ST16 family. Among the most important product introductions was SmartJTM, a 32-bit platform for next generation, multi-application smartcards. Developed in collaboration with leading players in the smartcard market, SmartJ provides for the very fast execution of Java applets in multi-application smartcards and also includes a radical new deve- lopment methodology that allows rapid product development without compro- mising security. ST also introduced a complete solution, the ST19RF08 smartcard micro- controller and the STRF2163 card reader chipset, for the emerging market in contactless public transport ticketing. The new devices offer increased security over previous solutions without reducing transaction and passenger waiting time. ST was a pioneer of single-chip PC technology and in 1999 announced the latest addition to its range of superintegrated devices that deliver cost- effective PC functionality targeted at different applications. The STPCC0375BTC3 supports synchronous DRAMs and provides all of the functions required to build x86-based information and Internet appliances on a single chip. ST’s key customers in the industrial market include Delta, Gemplus, Philips, Schlumberger, Schneider and Siemens.
