In April of this year, ST won the Corporate University Excellence Award for developing and implementing innovative marketing techniques to encourage learning. The Corporate University awards are run by Corporate University Xchange in New York, a research and consulting firm that specializes in establishing benchmarks for corporate universitites. Sponsored by the Financial Times, the panel of judges included representatives from academia, the Financial Times, established corporate universities and for-profit education analysts. ST was the only winner from outside the United States.

STU won the prize for the imaginative way a STU brand image was created, with specific marketing means for each customer category and for the way the University involved ST management in the teaching process.

As noted in the Financial Times (April 24, 1999) ST has extended the university concept to involve all links in the company's supply chain, offering business partners and suppliers the chance to participate in courses and set their own educational benchmarks. This has generated new business and has raised ST's standing both with customers and shareholders. For financial analysts, STU provides education on the chip industry in general.

The concept of "ST trains ST" has provided more than 300 company employees qualified as experts on specific subjects and the faculty has been expanded to include visiting professors and lecturers from external educational and management institutions.

Continuous education has been a fundamental part of ST's past and present success and is set to play a vital role in its future. STU currently runs more than 70 courses and, to date, 8,000 employees from more than 20 different nationalities have been students at STU. Courses directly related to ST's strategic goals are both developed and run at the campus in Fuveau (France) and at regional centers in Phoenix (USA) and Ang Mo Kio (Singapore). Teaching is thus relevant to actual and future business needs in each geographical area.

The STU portfolio includes modules on Management, Personal Development, Tools and Methodologies, Job-specific programs as well as courses which lead to a diploma recognized by external educational authroities. An example is the Masters Degree in Microelectronics Technology and Manufcturing Management, a program designed to train new engineering graduates or professionals for the microelectronics industry. Professors from accredited universities and engineering schools, together with ST experts deliver the course. The University campus is located close to ST's leading-edge technology wafer fab at Rousset near Aix-en-Provence in France.
