L9903 DC-MOTOR BRIDGE DRIVER FOR SMART
WINDSCREEN WIPER APPLICATIONS

The L9903 integrated driver interface circuit is designed to control four external N-channel MOS transistors in H-bridge configuration for DC-motor driving systems. The driving currents are dimensioned to drive power MOSFETs which allow a bridge current up to 40A (typical) for automotive applications such as smart front wipers.

For low power losses in the H-Bridge the internal driver stages allow fast switching of the external power MOSFETs. The PWM operation frequency for bridge control is availabile up to 30kHz. The rotating direction of the motor and the load current in the H-bridge

are controlled via a CMOS-compatible direction and PWM input. The device includes an internal charge pump to guarantee full functionality of the driver for supply voltages down to 8V. For lower supply voltages down to 6V an open drain switch is integrated, that can be connected with external components (capacitor, two diodes, inductance) as a step up converter.

For positive supply overvoltage the device withstands voltages up to 40V. During standby mode, activated by the enable input, the quiescent current is less than 50µA. The L9903 offers extensive protection functions such as thermal and overvoltage shutdown, an adjustable cross conduction protection and a short circuit shutdown. An open drain error flag indicates these errors. For diagnostics an ISO 9141 bus interface is integrated. Reverse battery protection of the H-bridge is assured with an external N-channel power MOSFET, controlled via an additional integrated charge pump.
