Abstract
Newly distributed multimedia applications increasingly allow for the opportunity of managing mobility, giving a user the ability to access data at any time from any place via terminals having several processing capabilities. Therefore, our industry needs to develop adequate mechanisms in order to manage the user's mobility effectively and the distributed processing of data transparently. In this scenario, we think that an approach based on the mobile agent paradigm can be particularly good for dealing with the described issues by making service provisioning highly flexible and customizable. In this context, this paper deals with the issues of Internet photography and of the distributed processing of digital images acquired with the use of a Digital Still Camera (DSC). We have presented the results described in a research project done in cooperation between ST Microelectronics and the University of Messina. This project includes an architectural solution for the distributed processing of high quality images based on the mobile agent communication paradigm.
