STMicroelectronics in Asia Pacific

STMicroelectronics launched its operations in Asia with the set up of an assembly and test plant in Singapore in 1969. A frontrunner in this fast-paced and highly competitive industry, the Company had early on recognized the vast potential and growing significance of the Asia Pacific region and has become a major player in the world’s fastest growing semiconductor market.

The Company has built a strong integrated presence all across the region, including R&D; advanced IC design; application support; front-end and back-end manufacturing; sales and marketing; and supply chain management. In 2006, ST was ranked the fourth largest semiconductor company in the Asia Pacific region.

ST set up the region’s first wafer fabrication plant in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore, in 1984. Today, the Ang Mo Kio wafer fab complex is the single largest volume-manufacturing facility within ST, generating approximately 45% of the Company’s worldwide production. The front-end manufacturing complex and the Asia Pacific headquarters, also located in Ang Mo Kio (ST TechnoPark) significantly strengthen ST’s leading technological position as well as its capability to serve the diverse needs of its customers for more advanced and sophisticated products in the region.

The Company also has two sites in its Asia Pacific region for assembly and testing: An advanced packaging research and development plant in Singapore (Toa Payoh) and a highly automated and computerized assembly and test plant in Malaysia (Muar). Accounting for about 30% of ST’s back-end production, these plants form the pillars of the Company’s worldwide assembly and test operations.

Complementing the Company’s strong manufacturing presence in the region is the Asia Pacific Design Center in Singapore. Established in 1984, it spearheaded ST’s penetration into the intensely competitive consumer and computer-peripherals market. The success of this design center has spawned a second one in Seoul, Korea. Both centers are satellite-linked to other ST R&D and design facilities around the world, providing access to the latest advanced design rules available in the Company. R&D activities relevant to the region, which include telecommunications, video and audio capabilities, greatly enhance ST's standing as a full service provider.

ST’s sales and marketing offices in Australia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are dedicated to addressing local marketplace dynamics - serving a multi-cultural and multi-national customer base with total quality and unmatched service. These sales offices are also supported by technical competence centers. ST’s logistics and warehousing center in Singapore operates as a regional hub, designed to manage distribution and just-in-time delivery to customers in Asia Pacific.

The Company was conferred the prestigious BHQ (Business Headquarters Award) status in recognition of ST's commitment to regional business growth in 1994 and it was bestowed with the Distinguished Partners in Progress Award by the Singapore government in 2000. ST clinched the prestigious Singapore Quality Award in 1999 and was awarded the Singapore Green Plan Award 2012 for its outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability.
