Strictly speaking, a semiconductor is a material with an electrical conductivity between that of an insulator and that of a conductor. Semiconductors can be single elements such as silicon or germanium or compounds such as gallium arsenide or indium phosphide. In day to day usage, however, the term "semiconductor" more frequently refers to the components manufactured from semiconductor materials.
- Yellow Room
The room in which wafers coated with photoresist are exposed to ultraviolet light in an aligner. Fluorescent lights in the room have yellow filter tubes around them to block unwanted ultraviolet light from that source.
- Yield
At Electrical Wafer Sorting (EWS), the good dice (the electrical portion of the wafer that contains the electronic functions) compared to the total number of dice on the wafer. Yields are generally divided into four major yield groups: wafer processing yield, wafer probe yield, assembly yield, final test yield.
- YTD
Year To Date
The quantity (or value) since the start of the current year.
