Pasquale Pistorio awarded Honoris Causa degree in Malta

Kirkop, Malta -- April 16, 1996 -- Pasquale Pistorio, president and CEO of SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics was awarded an Honoris Causa degree in Science from Malta University at a special degree ceremony yesterday in recognition of his contribution to the European high technology industry and to the industrial development of Malta.

To commemorate the event, Pistorio opened the SGS-THOMSON Periodicals Reading Room in the University Library, which will house specialized publications for the benefit of engineering students. "Malta's geographic position meant it was at the forefront of technology through the centuries.

I hope this Reading Room will help keep Malta at the leading edge of today's technology," said Pistorio. The ceremony formed part of a series of events to celebrate 15 years' successful operation of SGS-THOMSON's semiconductor assembly and test facility in Kirkop, Malta, in the presence of His Excellency Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, President of Malta, and The Honourable Dr Eddie Fenech Adami, Prime Minister At an official dinner in the presence of the President and Prime Minister of Malta, Pistorio praised the support of the Maltese Government and the 1800 SGS-THOMSON employees based at the Kirkop site. "Our 15-year presence in Malta has been entirely successful," said Pistorio.

"The results our company has achieved here are outstanding and I hope the Maltese community has received reciprocal benefits from our activities here. The enthusiasm and dedication of our staff - particularly towards our initiatives in Total Quality Management (TQM) and the environment - are superb," he added.

Notes to editors The SGS-THOMSON plant in Kirkop has a total covered floor area of 23,500 square meters, of which nearly half is devoted to production.

There are four clean room areas at a Class 10,000 level each devoted to different package types. There are more than 120 computer-controlled test systems operating around the clock, seven days a week to produce approximately 250 million devices per year. This makes the SGS-THOMSON plant in Kirkop the largest of its kind in Europe.
