New expansion inaugurated at Casablanca by SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics

Franco-Italian Manufacturer expands presence at Ain Sebaa

Ain Sebaa, Casablanca, Morocco -- March 25, 1997 -- The increased presence of SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics in Casablanca was formally recognized today, when its expanded production facilities were inaugurated by His Royal Highness Prince Heritier Sidi Mohammed; the French and Italian Ambassadors, Mr Michel de Bonnecorse and Emilio De Stefanis; Mr Pasquale Pistorio, President and Chief Executive Officer of SGS-THOMSON, as well as top representatives of the Company, which is one of the ten leading suppliers of semiconductors worldwide.

With the extension of the facility, the site now covers 26,000 square meters of covered area and the plant now has the capacity to assemble and test one billion components per year. The finished products are used by major customers and strategic partners of the company. Fundamental to all aspects of modern electronics, the product families assembled and tested in Casablanca are key components in industry sectors such as automotive, telecommunications, home appliances, computers and power conversion.

The factory now comprises 14,500 square meters of assembly and test area, including 3,500 square meters of Class 10,000 Clean Room. This is used to produce SCRs, triacs, diodes, power transistors, voltage regulators, micromodules for smartcards and radio frequency transistors and modules.

Welcoming all the Guests to the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Pistorio said "This expansion at Ain Sebaa is a major recognition of the great success we have achieved in Casablanca. Our ability to compete as a broad-range supplier and to achieve aggressive goals for revenue and market share relies heavily on the excellence of our manufacturing machine. Ain Sebaa has been able to call on the extensive resources and a wealth of expertise to emerge as a formidable supplier to the Company's global customer base."

Mr. Pistorio added : "As one of SGS-THOMSON's five assembly and test facilities around the world, Ain Sebaa is committed to customer-driven service. In recognition of its progress in terms of quality and reliability, SGS-THOMSON rated Ain Sebaa the "Best Back End Plant" within the Corporation in 1995.

n the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Heritier Sidi Mohammed, the Moroccan Minister of Commerce and Industry welcomed SGS-THOMSON's investments in Morocco and its positive effects on employment and exports, as well as the introduction of new technologies. Morocco has begun a vast effort of reform to establish an environment favorable to economic development, capable of attracting foreign investors, he said.
