SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics is sponsoring the Center for Magnetic Recording Research (CMRR), based at the University of California, San Diego. The Franco-Italian based semiconductor maker has signed an agreement with CMRR, under which SGS-THOMSON will donate $100,000 annually, to support its activities with the center, which is considered the world's top research institution in the field of magnetic disk and tape storage. CMRR was founded in 1983 by a consortium of the U.S. magnetic recording industry to perform research in magnetic disk and tape storage. SGS-THOMSON has joined the group of industrial sponsors, which provide part of the research expenses, and provide advice and direction to the center's programs. Franco Berenga, General Manager of the Data Storage Group, said, "SGS-THOMSON is a leading supplier of ICs and System-on-Chip solutions for data storage applications and we are committed to contributing to the industry's research activities. By strengthening the links with CMRR we aim to contribute to the research effort of the center and its output of highly trained engineers." Sheldon Schultz, Director of CMRR, said "Our mission is to advance the state-of-the-art in magnetic storage, and to produce highly trained graduate students and postdoctoral professionals. We can only do that with the participation of industry leaders, such as SGS-THOMSON, so we are very pleased to have them join our program." The research program is a collaborative approach by an interdisciplinary group of researchers to develop significant advances in ultra-high density storage, and ultra-high data rates, for tape and disk magnetic recording systems. Current broad areas include micromagnetics/recording physics, materials for media and heads, mechanics and tribology, read/write channels and ECC, and advanced instrumentation. |
