STMicroelectronics introduces QAM demodulator to meet all cable broadcasting standards |
||
Geneva, November 28, 2001 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), the world's leading supplier of chips for set-top boxes (STB), has introduced a new single-chip QAMFEC (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation/Forward Error Correction) demodulator for use in systems that receive compressed television, audio or data services via cable. The STV0297J is fully compliant with the DVB-C/ITU J83-A/B/C specifications and can also decode ITU J83-C (Japanese scheme) bitstreams, including Transport Stream Multiplex Frame, making it ideal as a universal solution for cable TV STBs, cable tuners with embedded QAM demodulation, cable modems and network interface modules.The STV0297J includes a high performance A/D converter that can handle up to 256-QAM signals in a direct IF sampling architecture, eliminating the need for an external down-converter. The demodulation is performed completely digitally, so that no external components are required for recovery loops. The device can handle a wide range of symbol rates, from 11.7 Mbaud down to 0.87 Mbaud, even in the presence of significant frequency offset, thereby covering all used symbol rates. It also supports all currently used square (16, 64, 256-QAM) and non-square (32, 128-QAM) constellations. The STV0297J outputs error-corrected MPEG-2 transport streams in a wide variety of formats, including the DVB Common Interface format. The device is designed to provide seamless connection to the packet demultiplexers in ST's OMEGA (STi55xx) or ST20-TPx back-end chips, the de facto industry standards. "The STV0297J allows equipment manufacturers to address all world markets with a single device that offers full flexibility without sacrificing performance or cost-effectiveness. Coupled with our OMEGA back-end devices, it is the industry's most advanced system-on-chip solution for cable equipment," said Christos Lagomichos, General Manager of ST's Set Top Box Division. Housed in a compact TQFP64 package and consuming typically only 500mW, the small footprint, low power consumption and outstanding BER (Bit Error Rate) performance make the STV0297J an extremely cost-effective solution, while the many application-oriented digital features, controlled via an I2C interface, enable the design of high quality systems. ST has paid particular attention to application issues, with the STV0297J providing outputs (such as delayed AGC and a noise-free I2C bus dedicated to tuner control) that simplify the design of high quality application boards. Samples of the STV0297J are available now and will be supported by a full evaluation package. Volume production is scheduled for Q2, 2002.
