STMicroelectronics and Microtune Ship Enhanced DOCSIS 1.1 Cable Modem Reference Design |
||
Geneva, Switzerland and Plano, TX, October 3, 2001 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) and Microtune, Inc. (NASDAQ: TUNE) today announced that an enhanced version of their jointly developed cable modem reference design is now shipping to customers. In addition to ST's DOCSIS 1.1 cable modem integrated circuit (IC), the reference design incorporates Microtune's new, low-power MicroTuner single-chip tuner. Developed to accelerate the deployment of DOCSIS 1.1-compliant cable access devices, the reference design is engineered to offer the most comprehensive, lowest power, and most cost-effective cable modem system on the market today. The reference design is based on ST's STV0396 single-chip cable modem and Microtune's MicroTuner MT2040 tuner, MicroStreamer MT1530 upstream amplifier and MT1230 Intermediate Frequency Amplifier. The platform combines the two companies' superior hardware and flexible software in a complete, ready-to-evaluate, -customize and -produce cable modem system solution. It is the latest initiative resulting from the cooperation between ST and Microtune."The enhanced reference design reflects the commitment of ST and Microtune to continually evolve our joint cable broadband solutions to incorporate next-generation digital and radio frequency ICs, providing customers a migration path to continued cost, power and performance improvements," said Christos Lagomichos, Group Vice President and General Manager of ST's Set Top Box Division. "The reference design also demonstrates the close collaboration between our two companies in bringing industry-standard solutions to market that offer customers significant time-to-market, competitive and price/performance advantages." "Price/performance, low power and production worthiness are emerging as key criteria for OEMs in migrating to their next-generation DOCSIS 1.1-based products, and Microtune and ST are meeting these challenges with leading-edge ICs and system solutions," explained Douglas J. Bartek, Chairman and CEO of Microtune. "The implementation of Microtune's new low-power and highly integrated MicroTuner MT2040 into our joint cable modem reference design illustrates this strategy. The reference design leverages our complementary technologies and systems expertise, enabling our customers to streamline development of premier consumer electronics products." Both companies are jointly selling the cable modem reference design. The two companies continue to work towards joint programs for other high-growth markets beyond near-term cable modem opportunities.
