STMicroelectronics' Fabio Borri receives EPA's 2002 Climate Protection Award |

Geneva, March 20, 2002 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) announced today that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has selected Fabio Romano Borri, Corporate Director of Environmental Strategies at ST for the past eight years, to receive its Climate Protection Award for 2002. The award recognizes Borri's leadership in establishing aggressive plans to reduce the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). PFCs are gases used for cleaning and etching during integrated circuit manufacturing and, like CO2, are known to contribute to global warming. Established in 1998, the EPA's Climate Protection Award recognizes exceptional leadership, personal dedication, and technical achievement in protecting the environment, in particular by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the earth's climate. Since its inception, the Climate Protection Award has been presented to 48 corporate, military, association, and individual candidates in 7 countries; Borri led ST to become one of the first electronics-industry corporate winners in 1999. Recognized accomplishments can include stewardship, product introductions, pollution prevention, and engineering innovation. Borri, in addition to heading ST's Corporate Environment Group, has played leadership roles in the European Electronic Component Manufacturers Association, the European Semiconductor Industry Association, and the World Semiconductor Council that, in 1998, received the EPA Climate Protection Award for defining its global PFC climate goals. In 1999, Borri steered ST to establish aggressive plans for the reduction of its PFC emissions in 2008 to ten percent below their 1995 level, two years ahead of a deadline set for the industry by the World Semiconductor Council. Under Borri's plans, ST's cumulative reductions of PFCs by 2010 will amount to the equivalent of 10.3 million metric tons of CO2. Beyond that objective, ST has set a goal to achieve environmental neutrality for CO2 emissions from electrical production by 2012, further reducing CO2 emissions by 11 million metric tons, bringing ST's total greenhouse gas reduction to 21.3 million metric tons of CO2 (5.8 million metric tons of carbon equivalent) by 2012. The program to achieve environmental neutrality for CO2 emissions includes increasing electrical efficiency; relying on alternative sources, primarily cogeneration, as well as wind and solar energy; and absorbing CO2 emissions by reforestation. Borri will be presented with the 2002 Climate Protection Award on March 25 in Washington, D.C.
