Low-Voltage, High-Side MOSFET Power Switch from STMicroelectronics' Interface Family Offers Programmable Output Current

Key features include 2.7 to 5.5V operation, thermal shutdown, and fault indicator

PHOTO Geneva, September 13, 2002 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) today announced the ST890, a low-voltage, P-channel MOSFET power switch for USB and high-side load-switching applications. Operating from 2.7 to 5.5V, and therefore well suited to both 3 and 5V systems, the ST890 features internal, programmable current-limiting circuitry to protect against overload and thermal overload protection to limit power dissipation and junction temperature.

Applications for the ST890 include use in PCMCIA and other access bus slots, like those found in portable equipment, where cards are inserted and removed without turning off the power.

The maximum current through the ST890 is limited to 1.2A, and is programmed by a resistor placed between the MOSFET's set pin and ground. Internal current limiting circuitry protects the input supply from overload. Other features of the ST890 include maximum quiescent currents of 25µA with the supply voltage on and 5µA when off, thermal shutdown, a fault indicator output, and a typical on resistance (RDS(on)) of only 90mohms

Two versions of the ST890 are available: one with an operating junction temperature of 0° to 70°C (C series) and another with an operating junction temperature of 40° to 85°C (B series).

The ST890 high-side MOSFET power switch comes in an SO-8 package in both tape and reel and tube formats. The ST890 is available now in volume quantities.
