More than ten years ago ST introduced the first quad channel high-side-driver for process control in the second version of the M0 technology. The highly successful VN330SP became a reference design in the industrial field. Its outstanding results soon led to the parallel development of the twin salestype known as VN340SP.
The VN340SP improved the VN330SP idea thanks to the integration of the Input/Output blocks (I/O). The I/O blocks allowed the single channel to be driven by the input pin and at the same time able to get a flag signal from it, when the channel overtemperature protection is active.
A Large Product Range
VN330SP and VN340SP are still in mass production and their expected
lifetime is in the range of 5 years, in the worst-case estimation,
or 10 years according to optimistic opinions.
With the VNQ860/SP ST intends to extend its VIPower quad channel
high-side-driver range for industrial process control applications,
offering an ideal solution both in terms of specific performance
and low cost where small loads with a typical current of 0.25A
must be driven.
Features
CMOS compatible I/Os
Undervoltage shut-down
Overvoltage shut-down
Shorted load protection
Thermal shutdown
Very low stand-by current
Protection against loss of ground
Conforms to the IEC1131 Norm (Programmable
Controllers International Standard)
The VNQ860/SP is a monolithic device made using the VIPowers
M0, version 3 technology.
The key parameters of VNQ860/SP are shown below:
Operating voltage range: 5.5V to 36V
Minimum breakdown voltage: 41V
RDS(on) typical @ 25°C: 270mOhm
Current limitation minimum value: 0.35A
Supply current in off state: 70µA typical
Of course the main benefit of the devices consists in the built-in
protection connected to the channels. Each channel has in fact,
an active current limitation combined with thermal shut-down and
automatic restart with thermal hysteresis to protect the single
channel against overload. Besides that, an active voltage clamp
is integrated. The ground pin disconnection protection acts at
device level, automatically turning off all the channels.
The under-voltage detection does not allow the switch-on of the
device if a minimum supply voltage is not present, while the over-voltage
detection switches-off the device when a voltage higher than 36V
(minimum) appears.
Applications
The VNQ860/SP has been specifically designed for industrial process
control, nevertheless the device can be easily applied without
any drawbacks in any low voltage application where protected solid
state switches are required. Therefore we can affirm that it is
a suitable solution in the automotive environment as well as in
the consumer market.
