STM86312
22bit VACUUM FLUORESCENT DISPLAY DRIVER CONTROLLER

STM86312 Product Page

The STM86312 is a VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display) controller/driver driven on a 1/4 to 1/11-duty factor. It consists of 11 segment output lines, 6 grid output lines, 5 segment/grid output drive lines, a display memory, a control circuit, and a key scan circuit. Serial input data are sent to the STM86312 through a three-line serial interface.
This VFD controller/driver is ideal as a peripheral device for single-chip microcomputers.

STM86312 Applications

DVD platforms;
High-end set-top boxes;
Personal video recorder platforms;
Information terminals;
POS systems;
Message board displays;
Ticket machines;
Car audio equipment.

STM86312 Functional Description

The STM86312 driver / controller is ideal for multiplexed (dynamic) displays.
It provides the correct time-controlled voltages to drive a Vacuum Fluorescent Display (up to 121 elements). High voltage output waveforms can switch between +5V and -30V external supply values, sufficient to switch on and cut-off most commonly used VFDs.
Display data ere internally stored in the dedicated 16x11 bit display memory, eliminating the need for additional external memory.
Appropriate commands are used to control the device. The chosen communication protocol is the standard synchronous SPI: the STB command acts as a low level enable and the remaining two, Din and CLK, have to be sent synchronized to each other. The STM86312 accepts up to a 1MHz signal frequency. A dedicated block controls the data exchanged between the external micro and the STM86312.
To vary the brightness of the display in a correct way, without affecting the filament voltage value, one of eight available dimming values can be chosen.
Extra features are the four LED outputs, the four general input ports and the possibility to scan a keyboard up to a 6x4 type.
