IBERDROLA
has announced the development of a new open, public and non-proprietary
telecom architecture to support not only smart metering, but also
to progress towards the electricity networks of the future.

the Iberdrola's announcement IBERDROLA has gathered the
relevant national and international industry players in the
areas of metering, telecommunications, and silicon manufacturing
to define, test and develop an open, public and standard AMI
(automatic meter infrastructure), into what is called PRIME
(Powerline Related Intelligent Metering Evolution) project.
In 2007 IBERDROLA performed several tests in different locations
of its electricity network, using a new high-speed narrowband
powerline communication architecture based on OFDM (orthogonal
frequency division multiplexing), with outstanding results.
STMicroelectronics is a proud partner of this initiative which
will ultimately provide energy utilities with the means to enlarge
the scope for the adoption of smart metering technologies.
ST is a leader in providing robust and cost-effective powerline
communication solutions which are already used in large scale
AMR/AMM deployments, and is working on an advanced platform
that will enable the most economical implementation of high-performance
PRIME-based OFDM PLC smart meters. This is the result of a sustained
R&D effort over nearly two decades that has allowed ST to
offer one of the world’s broadest product portfolios of
application-specific products for the smart-metering market,
ranging from field-proven powerline transceivers to high-performance
microcontrollers, real-time clocks, smart-power supplies, flexible
energy metering devices, discrete and protection components. |
