NEATSwitch™: ST2042 & ST2052
Current limiting power distribution switches

Product Pages:
ST2042 ST2052

ST’s ST2042 and ST2052 power switches provide Current Limiting protection in USB applications where heavy capacitive loads and short circuits are a major concern. These devices integrate 80mOhm N-Channel MOSFET high-side power switches for Power-Distribution systems which require multiple power switches in a single package.

Application Area

The ST2042 and ST2052 belong to ST’s current expanding family of NEATSwitches (Nano-speed, Efficient Power, Application Specific and Tiny Package) and are especially suitable for USB ports, USB powered hubs and individual port protection in a dual-port topology. Application areas include:
USB Peripherals
Notebook PCs
USB powered hubs
General purpose power switching

Functional Description

ST2042 and ST2052 incorporate two low resistance switches in a single package. Each switch is controlled by an individual logic enable signal and is capable of continuous current intake of up to 500mA. Should a short circuit occur, or should the output load exceed the current-limit threshold, the output current is limited to a safe level by switching to a constant current mode and switching the overcurrent logic output pin to a low state.
In situations where continuous heavy overloads and
short circuits increase power dissipation in the switch, thus increasing junction temperatures, a thermal protection circuit shuts down the switch, preventing any damage. Automatic recovery from a thermal shutdown condition occurs after the device has cooled sufficiently. Internal circuitry ensures the switch remains off until a valid input voltage is present.

Thermal Sense Protection

ST2042 and ST2052 power distribution switches integrate a dual threshold thermal trip function to provide continuous switch operation in single fault conditions. When die temperature reaches 140°C, internal thermal sense circuitry identifies the power switch in overcurrent condition and switches it off, thus isolating the fault without interrupting operation of the adjacent power switch. An open-drain output is asserted (active low) when overheating or overcurrent occurs.

Package

ST2042 and ST2052 are available in 8 pin small-outline SO-8 packages, capable of operating under harsh ambient conditions of -40°C to 85°C. The SO-8 packages are available in tube or tape and reel packaging.
