Programmable Li-ION battery charger system
for portable applications

In the last few years, a great number of Li-Ion powered applications such as cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras and MP3 players have been introduced. Due to their portability, two of the most important requirements are: Battery life - the time the application runs until it needs to be recharged; “Lifespan” - the total time the battery lasts before it must be replaced.
To best meet these requirements, the battery charger system management must implement special features, such as fully programmable charge, end of charge, and battery temperature monitor. It must also be as small as possible to fit in more and more compact applications.

L6924D basic connections

L6924D is the ideal solution for space-limited applications because it integrates all of the power elements in a very small package (3mm x 3mm). Designers can choose between Linear and Quasi-Pulse charging modes, depending on the purpose. Linear Mode is suitable for applications requiring low-cost adapters, and Quasi-Pulse Mode is ideal for applications that need very low power consumption (e.g. PDAs, cellular phones and digital cameras).
A set of default charging parameters is available but the device also implements a fully programmable charging system, including I/V pre-charge, current charge, and charging time. These features give designers greater flexibility in application designs where keeping the number of external devices to a minimum is a key objective.
The L6924D is perfectly suited for use with the Universal Serial Bus (USB), which is the most popular interface in computer architectures today.
