Telecom Equipment is protected against lightning surges with Trisils and mainly by SMP100LC or SMP100MC series on central office side.
Against power fault surges, equipment is protected with serial elements such as fuses, positive temperature coefficient (PTC).
With ADSL and especially ADSL2+, debit rates are increasing and line impedance is becoming critical. On one side, ST has introduced Micro Capacitance Trisil devices (SMP100MC-xxx) to reduce parasitic capacitance. For the same reason, the trend on serial protection is to use fuses which have no resistive drawback in normal operating conditions.
ST and Cooper Bussmann are cooperating in the promotion of complementary telecom products, and in the definition of new products, with the intent to provide a complete protection solution set for telecom segment customers (Press release).
ST is a leading supplier of silicon protection products for telecom use and Cooper Bussmann is a leading supplier of telecom fuses, including the Bussmann® TCP™ Series Telecom Circuit Protector.
This joint venture will supply designers with protection solutions complying with worldwide telecom standards.
Each company will continue to manufacture and sell their own branded products, but joint application testing creates a coordinated protection solution that practically eliminates the design risk associated with telecom circuit protection. This cooperation provides a complete solution with SMP100MC Trisil and TCP1.25A fuse ready to be used without any need to perform tests - the target being design time saving.
