Smartcard ICs
32-bit Platform ICs

To meet the increasing requirement for multifunction cards, STMicroelectronics was, in 1999, the first to demonstrate secure 32-bit MCUs for smartcards. Today ST has over 10 million 32-bit smartcard microcontroller units from its pioneering ST22 family in use. This unrivalled range of 32-bit devices is based around a proprietary 32-bit SmartJ Java™ accelerated secure RISC core.

STMicroelectronics’ SmartJ™ is the ideal smartcard core on which to develop multi-application solutions, open platforms, and high-powered SIM applications. The SmartJ advanced silicon platform provides rapid 32-bit RISC processing and enables direct execution of the majority of JavaCard™ 2.1 byte codes, as well as its own optimized native language. This innovative core provides openness, modularity, security and a fast time-to-market methodology for delivering powerful, secure 32-bit smartcard solutions.

A complete family
The ST22 family offers ST’s customers a broad choice, from embedded memory ranging from 72KB (ST22N072), 144KB (ST22N144) to 256KB (ST22N256), enabling the efficient development of a comprehensive set of advanced SIMs and conditional access applications. The ST22N256, the latest addition to the ST22 family, is developed in 0.15 micron technology, giving developers 256KB of EEPROM memory and a fast asynchronous serial interface (ASI) to enable up to 440 Kbit/s communication speeds with mobile or other equipment.

Applications
The ST22 family provides memory ranges from 72 to 256KB, with code compatibility and advanced development tools, and is perfectly adapted to the needs of 3G mobile applications, such as (U)SIM cards (universal subscriber identity modules). High memory capacity allows storage of multimedia messaging system (MMS) data and photographic images, coupled with the processing and communication power to transfer and use these data efficiently, to provide advanced phonebooks and audio-visual services. The ST22 range is also ideal for pay-TV and IT security environments, with its full speed USB interface enabling the development of a wide variety of new and secure applications.
