STGF20NB60S Product Page

Three new IGBTs for lighting have recently gone into production.
The STGF7NB60SL and the STGF20NB60S are designed for light dimming applications, while the STGD5NB120SZ is for pre-heating ballasts. All three devices belong to the “S” family that are optimized to achieve minimum on-voltage drop for low frequency applications (freq < 1kHz).

STGD5NB120SZ For Pre-Heating

The electronic ballast, with respect to the magnetic ballast presents the following advantages: reduced ballast loss (higher efficiency) and weight, on-lamp power control, more efficient tube ignition and no flickering. To provide longer life and to insure an efficient ignition of the lamp the cathode must be preheated.

The preheating of the filaments allows an easy strike of the lamps thanks to the ignition voltage reduction.

Electrical Parameters Of STGD5NB120SZ

The built-in collector gate zener diodes and the integrated gate resistor on the STGD5NB120SZ ensure both a very precise active clamping and avalanche capability.
VCE(sat) < 2V @ 25°C;
IC = 5A @ 100°C;
BVCES = 1200V;
VGE(th) < 5V @ 25°C;
EAS > 10mJ @ 25°C with L = 1.8mH;

IGBTs FOR LIGHTING

Light Dimmer Application

In conventional dimming circuits the power is usually controlled by Triacs. The circuit is potentially noisy due to the AC current flowing through the series inductor used for R.F.I. filtering. The new light dimmers use an isolated gate power switch such as an IGBT. This dimmer can work at any mains voltage by adapting the IGBT to the load, where the power is controlled by varying its conduction time.

Should a short circuit occur, the over current is sensed across the shunt resistor. As soon as the shunt voltage reaches a predetermined level, the IGBT is turned off and the controller is reset for a long enough period to avoid spurious restart.

STGF20NB60S & STGF7NB60SL For Light Dimmers

The STGF7NB60SL and the STGF20NB60S are the latest IGBTs designed specifically for light dimming applications. Thanks to the lower threshold voltage, the STGF7NB60SL represents the best solution for light dimmers driven directly by a micro-controller. The 7A IGBT also shows higher ruggedness against short circuit (tSCW = 14µs typical), even if this is not requested for a slow-switching device.
