A common problem in battery-operated devices is the battery management, that is the control of the charge in the case of lithium-ion cells.

Portable electronic manufacturers have to ensure a very long battery life, for this reason it is necessary to introduce both battery protection circuitry and battery charger control circuitry inside the cell.

Battery Pack Protection
The new generation of lithium-ion batteries used in portable electronic equipment, show superior performance versus the nickel type in terms of energy density, higher cell voltage and low self-discharge rate.
These batteries need an over current detection and have to be protected against over-charge and over-discharge. A battery protection circuitry scheme uses two external back-to-back MOSFETs in common drain configuration.
