The new generation of lithium-ion batteries used in portable electronic equipment, show superior performance versus the nickel type in terms of energy density, higher cell voltage and low self-discharge rate.
These batteries need an over current detection and have to be protected against over-charge and over-discharge. A battery protection circuitry scheme uses two external back-to-back MOSFETs in common drain configuration.
