LDMOS Product Family for Cellular Base StationsThe emerging standards in the telecom market call for new technologies and products able to fulfil the high linearity requirements of digital communication combined with low cost solutions and high volume manufacturing capability. ST has introduced a series of RF power transistors especially designed for Base Station (BTS) applications across the frequency bands 380-512MHz and 806-860 MHz (TETRA) as well as all the main 1GHz Digital Cellular Standards: 925-960 MHz (GSM,GPRS,EDGE) and 869-894MHz (IS-95,IS-54/136) etc. These products use ST’s state-of-the-art LDMOS technology (LdmoST), housed either in the conventional ceramic package types (SD57xxx series) or in the PowerSO-10RF plastic package (PD57xxx series). Handling plastic packages introduces new concepts into RF amplifier design and manufacturing. ST is a pioneer in this field suggesting innovat ive solutions to BTS manufacturers.

The LdmoST Family
The LdmoST family offers complete solutions from 2W up to 120W Output Power,26-28V supply with operating frequencies up to 960MHz. Customers wanting to design cost effective and high performance BTS will certainly find a solution based on the LdmoST product portfolio.
The SD57xxx series offer products from 30W to 120W in ceramic packages,while the PD57xxx series offers all the Pout levels from 2W to 70W in PowerSO-10RF plastic package. Two lead configurations are available for PowerSO-10RF.
The straight lead version (add “S ” suffix after P/N) will allow direct mounting on heatsink through solder reflow. The formed lead version is the first true high power SMD package for RF applications. Different mounting methods are recommended depending on the requested dissipated power (see application note AN1294: PowerSO-10RF The First True RF Power SMD Package).
From 2W,by direct mounting on copper foil on PCB, up to 18W,by mounting on PCB with via holes.
Internal matching is now available in ceramic packages, to optimise performance for the Cellular BTS standards. It will also be added in PowerSO-10RF,to help customers designing broadband amplifiers with significant cost reduction.

PA Solutions and Demoboards

LdmoST Solution for Cellular BTSIn order to support customer design-in activities a new series of demoboards are under development.They are specifically designed for all telecom applications such as cellular BTS and PMR (Private Mobile Radio)using the new family of LDMOS products in the PowerSO-10RF plastic package.The first of this series is called DB-960- 70W,a 70 Watts amplifier using two PD57045S (45W LDMOS in PowerSO-10RF) and especially designed to fulfil GSM900 BTS requirements with a typical gain of 13dB,capable of withstanding 10:1 VSWR all phases and with harmonics lower than –30 dBc. In addition to its good RF performance, DB-960-70W will provide a unique solution, which will allow a significant reduction in component costs.
