Global sales of smartphones to end users totaled 344 million units in the second quarter of 2016, a 4.3 percent increase over the same period in 2015, according to Gartner, Inc. It also reported five of Top 10 Worldwide Mobile Phone Vendors increased sales in second quarter of 2016. Smart Wearables like watches, gaming and fitness are also adding to consumers’ high mobility. This trend of consumers being highly mobile is pushing for Smart Chargers to consolidate (USB-PDTM), fast (Quick Chargers) and even wireless (Qi, AWP, Airfuel Alliance).
Energy efficiency, faster charging and smaller form factor are the major challenges of smart chargers design. With standardization of connectors like USB-type CTM and market demand for highly-integrated and cost-effective solutions, Smart Charger designers have a very daunting task ahead.
