Power and Energy
- USB Type-C™ and Power Delivery
Flexible and robust solutions for certified source and sink
Today, an increasing number of devices and applications are adopting USB Type-C connectors for many good reasons:
- With reversible plugs, it can be plugged into a device both sides of the cable;
- Can carry up to 100W of charging power (from 5V/0.5A up to 20V/5.0A);
- t merges both legacy Type-A and -B functions in a single port and can even change roles on the fly.
New products for new applications
In addition to complying with USB I/F requirements, application-specific features are mandatory to ensure safe operation with the correct protection level, regardless of the use case.
As every USB Type-C implementation is application specific, ST offers several reference designs to reduce development time and costs.

- ST Power Devices
GaN Family – VIPerGaN50 / MasterGaN1 and ST-One Devices
The VIPERGAN50 is a high voltage converter, designed for medium power quasi-resonant ZVS (Zero Voltage Switching at switch turn-on) flyback converters, capable to provide an output power up to 50 W in wide range. It integrates a complete set of features that provide an extremely flexible and easy to use chip and helps to design a highly efficient offline power supply.
The ZVS quasi-resonant operation with the dynamic blanking time feature and the valley synchronization function, that turns on the power switch always at the valley of the drain resonance, reduces the switching losses and maximizes the overall efficiency at any input line and load condition. The advanced power management with the low quiescent helps to achieve low stand-by consumptions. The feed-forward compensation minimizes the maximum output peak power variation over the entire input voltage range.
In addition to the above functions, the device offers protection features that considerably increase end-product’s safety and reliability: the output overvoltage protection, the overtemperature protection (OTP), the overload protection (OLP), the brown-in/out protection, that set the input voltage level to power on and power off the converter and the input overvoltage protection (iOVP), that protects the system in case of an abnormal increase of the input line. All the protections are auto-restart mode.
The MASTERGAN1 is an advanced power system-in-package integrating a gate driver and two enhancement mode GaN transistors in half‑bridge configuration. The integrated power GaNs have RDS(ON) of 150 mΩ and 650 V drain‑source breakdown voltage, while the high side of the embedded gate driver can be easily supplied by the integrated bootstrap diode.
The MASTERGAN1 features UVLO protection on both the lower and upper driving sections, preventing the power switches from operating in low efficiency or dangerous conditions. The interlocking function avoids cross-conduction conditions.
The input pins extended range enables an easy interfacing with microcontrollers, DSP units or Hall effect sensors.
The MASTERGAN1 operates in the industrial temperature range, from -40 to 125°C.
The device is available in a compact 9 x 9 mm QFN package.
The ST-ONE is the world’s first digital controller embedding an Arm® Cortex® M0+ core, an offline programmable controller with synchronous rectification, and USB PD PHY in a single package. It is designed to control ZVS non-complementary active clamp flyback converters to create high-power density chargers and adapters with USB-PD interface.
The device includes an active clamp flyback controller and its HV startup on the primary side, a microcontroller and all the peripherals required to control the conversion and the USB-PD communication on the secondary side. The two sides are connected through an embedded galvanically-isolated dual communication channel. By using a novel non-complementary control technique and specifically designed power modes the device allows to reach both high efficiency and low no load power consumption.
The device is delivered with a pre-loaded firmware, which handles the power conversion and the communication protocols for USB-PD, including optional PPS and electronically-marked cable management.
A dedicated memory stores a default device configuration during factory process. The user can change or adapt this memory area to fit the final product specifications.

STDES-3KWTLCP - 3 kW telecom rectifier reference design based on the STM32G474RBT6 digital power MCU
The STDES-3KWTLCP is a 3 kW AC-DC converter designed for telecom rectifier applications. This type of application requires high efficiency over the entire load operating range and across the universal mains input voltage range.
