IEEE 802.15.4 is a technical standard – maintained by the IEEE 802.15 working group – that defines the physical layer and media access control (MAC) specifications for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs). It thus provides a generic standard MAC layer that can be the basis for protocols – including ZigBee and Thread – which then define the upper layers of the stack.
