Always-on iNEMO™ inertial measurement unit improves accuracy, optimizes system power

STs LSM6DSO iNEMO™ Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) is an always-on 3D accelerometer and 3D gyroscope system-in-package.  The LSM6DSO contains a 9-kbyte FIFO that can store significantly more data than comparable sensors and, as a result, allows the system processor to wait longer and make fewer requests for data. In addition, the LSM6DSO adds
a MIPI I3C serial interface to a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) / I2C. The higher speed MIPI I3C interface offers dynamic address assignment, follower-initiated communication, and communication speeds about 10x faster than I2C. By transmitting data faster and less frequently, the LSM6DSO lets the processor sleep longer and the system to use less power. An embedded programmable finite state machine with the LSM6DSO also contributes to reducing the processor’s workload. The LSM6DSO emphasizes accuracy, too.

The sensor also supports an enhanced ST-developed pedometer algorithm that uses floating-point math to reduce step-counter errors by 60%, reduction and contains a false-positive rejection block that recognizes bus, subway, and other conveyance movements to avoid counting them as steps.

LSM6DSL and LSM6DSM combine OIS and motion-tracking

Ultra-low-power 6-Axis MEMS sensor modules for “always-on” motion-sensing

ST’s new ultra-low-power LSM6DSL and LSM6DSM highly miniaturized 6-axis MEMS inertial modules reduce power consumption by as much as 50% over current-generation products, enabling a much longer “always-on” motion-sensing that results in an enhanced user experience for battery-powered applications.

In addition to supporting main OS requirements, these modules offer real, virtual and batch sensors with up to 4 Kbytes for dynamic data batching for advanced pedometer, timestamp, wrist tilt and many other smart functions. Specifically designed for OIS applications, the LSM6DSM comes with a new low-noise gyroscope and configurable filter as well as a dedicated additional processing and serial port that together improve camera-OIS performance. Both devices are available in 14-lead LGA modules (2.5 x 3 x 0.83 mm) that are pin-and-footprint compatible with LSM6DS3/H devices.
