Ultra-low power multi-modulation wireless STM32WLE5 microcontrollers
Based on an Arm® Cortex®‐M4 core running at 48 MHz, and a sub-GHz radio based-on Semtech SX126x, the STM32WLE5 microcontroller is an open platform supporting LoRa, (G)FSK, (G)MSK and BPSK modulations.
Thanks to a deep integration, the innovative and open architecture is optimized for Low-Power Wide Area Networks, legacy / proprietary protocols, flexible resource use, power management for a lower BOM cost and a better user experience.
Developed using the same technology as our ultra-low-power STM32L4 microcontrollers, the STM32WL series provides a similar digital and analog peripherals set suitable for basic and complex applications requiring an extended battery life and a long RF range through a sub-GHz transceiver.
STM32WLE5 microcontrollers comply with the physical layer requirements of LoRaWAN® specifications released by the LoRa Alliance™.
Available LoRa, (G)FSK, (G)MSK and BPSK modulations can also be used in legacy and proprietary protocols.
The radio is suitable for systems targeting compliance with radio regulations including but not limited to ETSI EN 300 220, FCC CFR 47 Part 15, China regulatory requirements and the Japanese ARIB T-108. Continuous frequency coverage from 150 MHz to 960 MHz allows the support of all major sub-GHz ISM bands around the world.
The STM32WLE5 line includes a wide variety of communication features including up to 43 GPIOs, an integrated SMPS for power consumption optimization, multiple low-power modes to maximize battery life. A dual-power output and a wide linear frequency range ensure worldwide compatibility
Security & ID
In addition to its wireless and ultra-low-power features, STM32WL microcontrollers include embedded security hardware functions such as 128- / 256-bit AES hardware encryption, PCROP read / write protection, and public-key cryptography with an elliptic curve encryption engine.
Package information and options
STM32WLE5 microcontrollers provide designers with flexibility in terms of memory size.
Four ECOPACK2® compliant packages, featuring three different memory sizes, are available to address different levels of complexity to ensure a cost-efficient fit for application requirements

As part of our embedded online event, we had the pleasure of filming with Reinhard Keil, a Senior Director of Embedded Tools at ARM.
This video is about the STM32L5, our recently announced ultra-low power microcontroller bringing a new security dimension. The STM32L5 is now in full production and all its ecosystem is available including hardware kits, software tools, firmware and all documentations of course. This is our first STM32 based on Cortex-M33 and its Trustzone and using specific ST security implementation - watch the video to find out more!
The STM32L5 is based on Arm® Cortex-M33 and TrustZone® technology combined with STMicroelectronics security implementation. On your STM32L562E-DK discovery board, TrustZone is disabled (factory setting) and you can develop as on any other STM32 device. This video shows how to enable TrustZone on STM32L562E-DK discovery using STM32CubeProgrammer and create, compile and debug or run a new project with STM32CubeIDE. It also shows how to open an example project delivered in STM32CubeL5 MCU Package, modify, compile and debug or run it. For further information, you can refer to AN5394 and AN5424 application notes.
