Why authenticate and keep track of batteries

Battery counterfeiting: a persistent global issue

More and more industrial and consumer devices are transitioning from wired to battery power, offering a critical advantage in terms of portability.

Through their lifecycle, battery-powered devices will need batteries to be replaced, generating a growing worldwide demand and a significant potential for increased revenue. However, this also opens the door to counterfeiting and cloning, with cheap replacement batteries, which can significantly affect the revenue of battery manufacturers as well as their brand image.

In addition to influencing business, these counterfeit batteries can put end users at risk with batteries that have not been tested in specific conditions, as in the case of fast chargers for instance. All kinds of devices can be impacted by fakes:

What about regulations and sustainability

What about regulations and sustainability

With this dramatic increase in the worldwide demand for batteries comes the question of sustainability, especially regarding their recycling. As a result, regulations are being put into place.

This is what has been done within the European Union (EU) which has introduced a new regulation for batteries (2023/1542), making it mandatory for these to be replaceable. This measure intends to contribute to improving the lifetime of devices.

While this is good news from a sustainability perspective, the replaceability of the batteries also paves the way for people to use cheaper third-party alternatives, or even counterfeits and clones.

Protect your batteries and your business

Protect your batteries and your business

To fight counterfeiting, battery manufacturers need to find a solution to protect their business from these cheap replacement batteries and to guarantee safe usage for their customers.

One solution is to embed an authentication solution to distinguish genuine batteries from third-party alternatives and counterfeits.
