Strategic update

One unified STM32 MCU platform for industrial, automotive, and robotics

Built for technology convergence and enabling physical AI. Designed to scale.

Our industry-first unified MCU platform unlocks new value for customers.

Technology convergence is happening. Industrial, automotive and robotics applications are adopting shared technology foundations across AI, security, safety, connectivity, sensing, and control. They require a common MCU platform to accelerate time to market.

The unified STM32 MCU platform provides a consistent foundation for scaling across domains, from industrial and robotics, to high-safety and automotive applications, while enabling development of physical AI applications.

With a shared architecture, a common ecosystem foundation, and shared process technologies across STM32 microcontrollers, customers can reuse knowledge, code, and investments with confidence, while preserving the requirements of their specific markets.

Three pillars for faster time to market

Extending STM32 to high-safety and automotive applications: discover STM32A

STM32 already spans high-performance, mainstream, mixed-signal, wireless, and ultra-low-power MCUs. Customers can now build on the broad STM32 portfolio enriched with STM32A for high-safety and automotive needs such as body, convenience, multi-domain, and actuation applications.

The STM32 Summit introduced the first wave of the STM32A roadmap with three product lines.

STM32A4 for entry-level nodes

  • Up to 0.5 Mbytes
  • QM/ASIL-B/crypto
  • Local sensors, actuators, access-control points, safety monitors and compact control units.

STM32A5 for body and comfort

  • Up to 4 Mbytes
  • ASIL-B safety, HSM
  • Mid-range safety-critical applications in industrial automation, robotics, and energy systems

Customer and partner insights into the unified STM32 MCU platform and STM32A

Frequently asked questions

What is technology convergence?

Convergence is the trend whereby automotive, industrial, and robotics systems increasingly face similar requirements in AI, security, safety, connectivity, sensing, and control, driving the adoption of common technology foundations and architectural patterns. While each domain retains its specific market needs, the underlying technologies are becoming more aligned.

What is the unified STM32 MCU platform?

ST has built a unified MCU platform around STM32, delivering continuity across three areas: long-term portfolio consistency and continuity thanks to the strategic choice of the Arm Cortex-M core, a common ecosystem foundation, and shared process technologies.

What are high-safety microcontrollers?

High-safety MCUs extend the benefits of a modern MCU platform into applications where functional safety is mandatory. They combine high-performance processing with hardware diagnostics, fault-detection mechanisms, and safety documentation that help designers achieve standards such as ISO 26262 up to ASIL-D. As industrial, automotive and robotics systems increasingly share similar technology foundations, the need for high-safety MCUs is expanding beyond traditional automotive applications.

How does STM32A extend the unified STM32 MCU platform?

STM32 was created two decades ago to serve the broad industrial market, and over time it has evolved into a platform that spans multiple markets and applications. The new STM32A product series represents the next step in that evolution, leveraging the STM32 heritage while capitalizing on 20 years of automotive experience to extend into high-safety and automotive applications.

When will STM32A be broadly available?

Several MCU series in the STM32A product line are already sampling. Broader availability is expected to begin with STM32A9 in the first half of 2027.
