Common-mode filters with integrated ESD protection

Common-mode filters with integrated ESD protection (ECMF)

High bandwidth (10 GHz) common-mode filters for high-speed USB4 and HDMI 2.1 standards

To ensure that today's industrial and personal electronics operate correctly in noisy or harsh environments, the sensitivity of RF antennas must be optimized and comply with suitable EMC standards. The radiated noise generated by high-speed data links such as USB and HDMI connectors must be suppressed to ensure the optimal RF sensitivity (to prevent antenna de-sense) and avoid EMC issues.

Moreover, with the continuous growth of high-speed datalinks, IC controllers or microcontrollers are increasingly sensitive to ESD which means that robust protections are required to avoid IC failures.

ST's ECMF™ filters feature deep, ultra-wide attenuation of common-mode noise at WLAN and Bluetooth frequencies (from 2.4 up to 6 GHz), combined with robust (+10 kV) contact discharge ESD protection. Thanks to their 10.7 GHz bandwidth, these new ECMF™ filters comply with latest high-speed standards including USB4, HDMI 2.1 and USB 3.2. Housed in tiny 6- and 10-lead µQFN packages, these devices are optimized for personal electronics and industrial applications.

Key features of ECMF™ filters

  • 10.7 GHz bandwidth to comply with USB4, HDMI 2.1 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 standards
  • High common-mode attenuation on WLAN band thanks to:
  • SCC21 @ 2.4 GHz = -15 dBm
  • SCC21 @ 5.0 GHz = -21 dBm
  • Low serial resistance: 3.0 Ω to reduce eye-diagram distortion
  • 6- and 10-lead µQFN packages: Thin package: 0.5 mm max that allows a very low PCB space consumption and a high reduction of parasitic elements through integration (Industrial optimization thanks to plastic package)
  • 0.25 pF line capacitance for a high-speed ESD protection and immunity

Mobile applications such as phones or tablets feature high-speed links to provide high-res video or high-data rate storage. As antennas used by the equipment to communicate with the base station become more and more wide band or smart, they become increasingly sensitive to electro-magnetic interference. This application note shows how prevent receiver sensitivity from being affected by this noise and how it is possible to maintain a correct reception.

pdf common mode filters

In our connected world, data is exchanged very quickly and content is displayed on large high-res screens. Common features include high-speed serial links, working in different modes and increasing data rates. However, fast transition times and long lines may induce radiation due to common-mode noise. In order to avoid these issues, the most efficient device to use is a common-mode filter. This application note describes the basic parameters of these devices and their benefits.
