STMicroelectronics Announces Shipment of Two Million Chipsets for XM Satellite Radio Receivers; Delivers Latest System-on-Chip Solution |
||
Geneva,
October 2, 2003 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) today announced that
total shipments of its chipsets for XM Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: XMSR)
receivers have now exceeded two million kits. The company also announced
that it has delivered to XM Satellite Radio working samples of a new one-chip
solution, replacing the previous two-chip solution. ST was originally selected by XM Satellite Radio in 1998 as the sole silicon vendor to develop and manufacture the chipset that adds XM capability to radio receivers, a key enabling technology for the first US-based digital satellite service. The chipset builds on ST's core knowhow in system-on-chip technology and design expertise in digital audio solutions. Since the first generation chipset was delivered in 2000 ST has introduced a second generation version using a more advanced process technology. A combined total of more than two million of these chipsets have been manufactured by ST and shipped to makers of XM radio receivers, including Pioneer, Alpine, Delphi, Sony and Clarion for use in vehicle and home receiver products. ST's new single chip solution, fabricated in 130nm technology, includes additional features that enhance overall performance and enable additional advanced data applications. "The success of the XM Satellite Radio chipset demonstrates the ability of ST to deliver value to the customer," commented Riccardo Ferrari, General Manager of ST's Audio Division. "Since ST was selected by XM in 1998 we have consistently achieved first time silicon success with each generation of products, meeting all delivery milestones and performance goals for this challenging project." "We are especially pleased that ST has reached this significant milestone, the shipment of our two-millionth chipset. In addition, ST's success at integrating all XM signal processing functions in a single chip is an enormous advance," said Dr. Stell Patsiokas, Executive Vice President, Technology and Engineering, XM Satellite Radio. "Clearly, these chipsets allow receiver makers to continue to add XM capability at a price that is attractive to consumers." About XM Satellite Radio XM is America's #1 satellite radio service. With more than 692,000 subscribers as of June 30, XM is on pace to have more than one million subscribers later this year.
