Eco-design

ST's eco-design commitment is disclosed in our EHS Decalogue.  
 
The objective of eco-design is to measure, determine and then reduce the environmental impact of our products throughout all of the stages of their life cycle, from the extraction of primary materials to the end-of-life of the final product.
 

Eco-design roadmap

In order to reach our eco-design goal, we have developed a decision-guiding tool that will allow our design teams to measure the environmental footprint of products and help them select the greenest product design. This tool will be implemented throughout all ST Product Groups.
 

LCA methodology

The starting point of our eco-design activity is Life-Cycle Assessment.
 
ST has developed its own Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology in accordance with ISO standards (ISO 14040, 2006; ISO 14044, 2006), and has conducted several studies to identify the main factors contributing to environmental impact. For us, eco-design focuses on addressing impact “hot spots”. 
 
ST’s LCA methodology takes into account the following key stages of the product life: 
 
  • Extraction and treatment of raw materials; 
  • Product manufacturing;
  • Transport and distribution; 
  • Product use; 
  • End of life.
A range of environmental impacts are analyzed and scored across multiple criteria. These figures are then aggregated to generate a single LCA product score.

LCA Screening 

There are significant challenges to carrying out a complete LCA for each of ST’s products, notably because of the vast number of different microchips we produce and the complexity of our manufacturing processes. To overcome this challenge, we have developed a methodology that enables us to provide a quick calculation of the carbon and water footprint of any product. This methodology provides water and carbon footprinting measurements comparable to full LCA, but within a shorter timeframe.
 
  • The water footprint estimates the m3 of water consumed throughout the product’s life cycle.
  • The CO2 footprint estimates the product’s CO2 emissions throughout its life cycle, expressed as kg CO2 equivalent.
 
In 2013 we have completed a third party assessment and validation of our "Screening LCA" methodology.
