On March 17th, 2004 STMicroelectronics announced that it has transfered the business, personnel, and technology assets related to the TouchChip Business Unit, to a new company called UPEK in a venture-backed spin-off transaction.

STMicroelectronics is remaining the primary supplier of silicon and components to UPEK and is a significant shareholder in the new company.
