STM32 Motor control starter kit

The STM32 microcontrollers with dedicated motor control peripherals and powerful Cortex™-M3 core offer the computing power developers need for 3-phase brushless motor vector control.

For developers of STM32-based motor control applications, the STM32 Motor control starter kit (STM3210B-MCKIT) provides a complete development platform with all the hardware and software required to get applications started on the right foot, and shorten time to market by allowing developers to apply what they learn in the evaluation phase to real-world applications.

The kit comes ready to run a PMSM motor (included) or AC induction motor (accessory). Simply power up the application hardware and you're ready to explore all the different parameters of the sensorless vector control algorithm.

Then, when you're ready, modify the demonstration application and use what you have learned to develop your own motor control applications. The Segger J-Link is included in the kit for connection to a host PC via an industry standard 20-pin JTAG connection. When connected to a host PC, the opto-isolation board provides galvanic isolation for the host PC and development tools on the 20-pin industry-standard JTAG connection.

The kit includes PMSM (sensored and sensorless) and AC induction (sensored) motor control libraries to facilitate implementation of the family's motor control peripherals. The libraries can be built using the free IAR Embedded Workbench (EWARM) KickStart edition (32K code-size limited), which includes the IAR C/C++ compiler.

Features and Benefits

The kit comes complete with:

24V DC Shinano PMSM 3-phase brushless motor

Motor control evaluation board

STM32 evaluation board (STM3210B-EVAL) with STM32F103xB device preprogrammed with sensorless PMSM motor control application, motor control connector, color LCD and user controls (push buttons, joystick, potentiometer, etc.)

Opto-isolation board for galvanic isolation on 20-pin JTAG connection between application boards and development tools

Segger J-Link USB/JTAG in-circuit debugger/programmer

USB cable

Software CD with:

– PMSM (sensored and sensorless) and AC induction (sensored) software libraries

– Libraries, user manuals and spreadsheets to customize control parameters of new motors and hardware documentation

– STM32 data sheet and reference manual

The following are not included in the STM3210B-MCKIT:

• 24V/3A power supply for the motor control board. A compatible power supply can be ordered from any electronics distributor.
• AC induction motor is available from ST as an accessory. Order code: ST7MC-MOT/IND.
• Integrated development environment and C/C++ compiler for ARM devices are available from a range of third-party tool providers. The motor control demonstration software has been design so that it can be recompiled using the IAR EWARM, KickStart edition (32K code size limited). For download refer to the IAR downloads site.

Ordering Information

The STM32 motor control kit and accessories are available from ST sales offices using the following order codes:

STM3210B-MCKIT – Complete motor control kit with firmware, STM3210B-EVAL, 7 Amp inverter board, opto-isolation board, Segger J-Link in-circuit debugger/programmer and 24V DC Shinano PMSM motor

ST7MC-MOT/IND – 240V/800W Selni tri-phase induction motor

AI-JTAG/OPTO-1 – Opto-isolation board for galvanic isolation for use between applications and development tools using a 20-pin JTAG connection

The complete software source code (demo and libraries) is provided on the CD-ROM with the STM3210B-MCKIT, with the exception of the Sensorless algorithm, which is delivered as an object file. To obtain the sensorless algorithm source code free of charge, please contact an ST sales office.

A free software license has to be signed electronically when installing the libraries on a PC.
