C. Papa - BiographyCarmelo Papa was born in 1949 in Castiglione di Sicilia (Italy). He graduated from the University of Catania (Sicily) with a degree in Nuclear Physics.

Papa began his career in the electronic systems industry in1977 with ICL (International Computers Limited), first as a software engineer and then in market development and in 1983, Papa returned to Catania to join ST as Marketing Manager for Standard Logic.

In 1986 he was appointed Director of Product Marketing and Customer Service for Transistors and Standard ICs. Between 1986 and 1999, he oversaw substantial growth in sales volume, from less than $100 million in 1986 to more than $500 million in 1999. He also made a key contribution to the growth of the Company’s overall presence in Catania, which is now a major site with R&D, product design, and wafer fabrication, as well as marketing and administrative departments.

In January 2000, Papa was appointed Corporate Vice President, Emerging Markets, and became responsible for ST’s Sales and Marketing organization in emerging geographical markets around the world, including Africa, Eastern Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East, and Russia. Under his guidance, the Emerging Markets have become the fastest growing region in ST, with a compound growth rate of approximately 44% a year between 2000 and 2004.

In July 2001, Papa took on additional worldwide responsibility for Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) at ST with the objective of driving forward this new important channel of business. In 2003, he was also placed in charge of formulating and leading ST’s strategy to provide dedicated solutions for the mass market, one of the most important growth areas for the Company’s sales in the coming years.

In 2005, Papa was chosen to lead ST’s Micro, Power and Analog Group, responsible for serving a broad customer base in a large variety of applications with a special emphasis on the industrial segment.

In January 2007, Papa was was promoted to Executive Vice President, joining ST’s Corporate Executive Committee, comprised of ten senior corporate executives, in addition to the COO and the CEO. In addition, he took control of ST’s Industrial & Multisegment Sector, a newly created entity that spans power and analog devices, microcontrollers, non-Flash memories, smartcards and Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS).
