Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairman
of the Corporate Executive Committee
STMicroelectronics
|
Born in 1945 in Martigues (France), Alain Dutheil
is an Engineering graduate from the Ecole Superieure d'Ingenieurs
of Marseilles, France.
He joined Texas Instruments in 1969 as a Production Engineer
and then held several positions within this company, first as
New Products Development Engineer in Dallas, Texas; then Engineering
Manager; followed by Director for Discrete Products in France.
In 1980, his attention to cultural issues outside strictly technical
aspects, combined with his dedication to human relations and his
interest in people management led to his appointment as Human
Resources Director for Texas Instruments, France, followed by
Director of Operations of Texas Instruments, Portugal. Dutheil
joined Thomson Semiconducteurs in 1983 as Plant Manager of the
Aix-en-Provence plant in France. He was later appointed General
Manager for the Discrete Products Division, a position that he
held until 1989, two years after the merger between the French
company Thomson Semiconducteurs and the Italian manufacturer SGS
Microelettronica that gave birth to the Franco-Italian group SGS-THOMSON
Microelectronics (now STMicroelectronics).
Dutheil became Corporate Vice President of the Company in 1989
and combined the positions of Director of Corporate Human Resources
and Director for Worldwide Back-End Manufacturing (four plants
and 8000 people throughout the world, at that time). Five years
later he relinquished his back-end manufacturing responsibilities
to take on the challenge of the strategic direction of the Company.
In 1994, Dutheil was appointed Corporate Vice President, Strategic
Planning, in addition to his position as Corporate Vice President,
Human Resources.
A firm believer of Total Quality Management (TQM) and employee
development and training, Dutheil implemented an active TQM network
and suggestion schemes throughout the world. He also created an
innovative education tool for the Company, the STMicroelectronics
University (STU), based at Fuveau, France, with branches in Catania,
Italy, Phoenix, USA, and Singapore. Since 1994, STU has trained
around 30,000 employees of the company in both management and
high-level technical disciplines.
In 2005, Dutheil was appointed ST’s Chief Operating Officer
and the Vice Chairman of the Corporate Executive Committee, comprised
of ten senior corporate executives in addition to the COO and
the CEO. He is also a member of the board of STMicroelectronics
Japan and for 10 years was the President and CEO of STMicroelectronics
SA, the French subsidiary of the Group. Thanks to his deep experience
in back-end activities, Dutheil also retains the responsibility
of President of STS Microelectronics, the joint venture formed
with Shenzhen SEG Hi-Tech Industrial Co. (SHIC) in the People’s
Republic of China.
Dutheil sits on the Board of Directors of MEDEA+, the pan-European
Programme for advanced cooperative Research and Development in
Microelectronics, and in November 2007, he took on the position
of the Chairman of the European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory
Council (ENIAC).
In 2005, Alain Dutheil was named a Chevalier of the Legion of
Honor by the French government in recognition of his outstanding
career in the service of science and industry.
