While the consumer market is pushing designers for more sophisticated digital concepts for ever lighter and thinner applications, the middle to high-end high power audio amplifier market still favours analog power design in the class A or AB topologies. In fact, from recording studios to football stadiums, compromised performance in professional audio is not an option. In the niche high-end Hi-Fi area end-users are interested only in valve or class A solutions.

The new 2STCxxxx and 2STAxxxx bipolar families are tailored specifi cally for high-power audio amplifi ers. Based on a new bipolar transistor-linear amplifier technology (BiT-LA), the product range offers V(BR)CEO up to 250 V, collector current up to 17 A and are housed in TO-247, TO-3P, TO-3 and TO-264 packages.

Technology description and highlights |
|
BiT-LA is a planar technology with an advanced base island layout. Special ballast resistances have been integrated in each emitter elementary cell to make the current more uniform throughout the device and balance the thermal performance. Thanks to the adopted structure layout the BiT-LA shows:
Excellent gain linearity for an accurate reproduction
of the input signal
Perfect complementary pair matching to assure
symmetrical performance
Good dynamic performance (fT typical value
~25 MHz)
Complementary pair gain linearity and matching is maintained over the whole temperature range of -40 ºC to +125 ºC. The devices with higher power dissipation (200 W to 250 W) use multi-wire emitter bonding in order to assure high ruggedness (Is/b).
