超音波診断装置は、プローブを使用して(非可聴域の)音波を患者の皮膚に直接印加し、さまざまな組織や臓器に接する際にそのエコーによって生じる伝播時間と振幅の差を解析することで機能します。

このような非破壊的技術は、リアルタイムの画像を生成し、心エコー検査や胎児診断などの用途で便利に利用できます。

再生画像の品質を確保する上で鍵となるのは、プローブが(通常、圧電トランスデューサを使用して)同時に処理できるピクセル数、および空間的・時間的に波形の焦点を合わせる機能(ビームフォーミング)です。

STは、圧電トランスデューサを励起するために使用される最先端のマルチチャネル高電圧送信パルサーICを提供して、高精度のビームフォーミングの実装をサポートしています。
